Every morning the marina has an all you can eat pancake breakfast at 8am - Rod went but I stayed on the boat & had 1 (of 2) of the cinnamon rolls that I got last night, hot out of the oven here. Not sure who had the most calories/sugar to charge our batteries! Tonight they deep fry turkey for dinner & everyone brings a dish. We did that last year so we moved on late in the morning.
Shawl Bay has limited power on the dock. They turn on a big generator to make the power & it's available from 7-11am & 4-10pm. The couple who was fired is still here & she made the cinnamon rolls last night. Apparently they have no other home or place to go & are waiting for someone to come pick them up. They have 3 young kids with them - very sad situation. Maybe they'll work things out with the owners??? Will have to hear from others after we leave or find out next year when we come back here.
This is one of the little marinas up here which is sorely in need of repair. We think a lot of them will eventually disappear as most of the owners don't have the money to keep them up and it sounds like all of the marinas are getting less traffic each summer - the trend even up here is more big boats, fewer small ones. The ones owned by older couples are slowly disappearing as it's hard to find buyers. Greenway Sound is abandoned, although some people still tie up there. We've heard the docks are slowly falling apart. Minstrail Island is another that has been abandoned. Lagoon Cove is for sale & will need repair if it's purchased. All the boaters are concerned & that's why they keep coming back to support the marinas. The feeling is that, long term, these little marinas will not be here at some point in the future.
We left Shawl around 10:00 & headed to Claydon Bay where we anchored for the night. It's just past Sullivan Bay Marina which will be our next stop - on the other side of the bay. Got there at 12:45. The bay is beautiful. We passed a little village on the way in & there are a couple of crab pots down where we anchored, probably from that village. Otherwise no other boats in here with us.
We used our water maker on the way - the first time on this trip except for testing. The water in the Broughtons is brown from the cedar in the water. It's safe to use but looks very unappetizing so we don't put it in the boat. Nice to have the water maker!!!
The weather has been pretty consistent since we came north. Foggy in the morning, sometimes until 2:00 or so. Then the blue sky & sun comes out. Highes in the low-mid 70's, lows in the mid-high 50's. Still only one rainy day since we left the end of June!
